fiber and a sensitive gut

Fiber tip

We have all heard of the benefits of increasing fiber in our diet.  But did you know that if you have gut issues like inflammation, IBS, or  IBD, too much fiber can actually irritate your gut.

If you start adding more fiber, like vegetables, fruits and grains and notice your gut isn’t responding well, and seems irritated, you should probably cut back a bit until you feel better. When you better you can start introducing fiber again in small amounts until you figure out the right amount for your body.

Yes, fiber provides our good bacteria with food and also provides our body with the roughage it needs to properly detox. However, different guts tolerate different amounts of fiber, especially if your gut is sensitive.

Sensitive gut tips:

  • Focus on softer fibers, like soluble instead of insoluble.

  • Avoid eating lots of raw vegetables, have steamed or sautéed instead.

  • Avoid the skins and seeds of fruits and vegetables. Insoluble fiber can irritate a sensitive gut.

I hope this helps!
